Amazon Cancels Development of Silk: Spider Society Amid Multiple Script Revisions

An adaptation of Amazon's Spider-Man universe has been officially canceled after undergoing numerous script changes, including one particularly odd iteration.

Amazon has decided to halt the development of its Spider-Man offshoot – Silk: Spider Society, after it underwent multiple script revisions. According to Deadline, this series, which had been in the works for the past five years, will not proceed. Sony Pictures Television is on the lookout for a new network to take over the series, a project led by Angela Kang of The Walking Dead fame.

The specific reasons behind its cancellation remain unspecified, but it is believed that the complex journey of its development played a significant role. In 2019, Sony enlisted Lauren Moon for a Silk television project, followed by collaboration plans with Amazon in 2020 for a suite of Marvel series headlined by Silk. Amazon Studios then added Tom Spezialy (of Watchmen) as a co-showrunner alongside Moon in 2021.

In 2022, a definitive series order was placed with Kang taking the helm as showrunner, executive producer, and writer, supported by Spider-Verse's Phil Lord and Chris Miller, along with Sony executive Amy Pascal in the role of executive producers. Subsequent to this development, Silk purportedly underwent three distinct conceptual revisions – one of which intriguingly suggested altering the show's focus away from its titular character.

Based on the insights shared, Amazon's decision to not resume the Silk writing room after the WGA writers' strike from the previous year played into the show's fate. Despite Kang presenting a new pitch that was reportedly well-received, Amazon ultimately chose to prioritize Noir – a fresh spin-off featuring Nicolas Cage – over Silk in its line-up of intellectual property endeavors.

Noir, a live-action series, will feature Cage reprising his role from Into the Spider-Verse. Its premiere date remains undetermined.
