The Return of Followers in Diablo 4: Everything We Know

The Diablo franchise has been around for twenty-plus years, and with each installment, new characters and new stories come out of the dark world of Sanctuary. In Diablo 4, players will once again be able to hire followers to accompany them on their journey through the depths of hell. But what exactly does this mean for the game?

First off, the Diablo 4 followers will only be featured in the game’s campaign. Lead class designer Adam Z. Jackson revealed that while they don’t have anything to announce about the Diablo 2-type follower that you hire, they’ll be sticking to the campaign for now. This means no hired guns or mercenary followers like in Diablo 2. Instead, it’ll be more akin to Diablo 3’s companion-based system.

In Diablo 3, you acquired three different companions during the story campaign. You had the Scoundrel, Sorceress, and Templar, who represented ranged DPS, tank, and magic-user, respectively. The Diablo 4 followers will likely be a variation of this, but with even more diverse companions to deepen the game’s strategic options and provide interesting ways to customize your character.

Despite the lack of a traditional follower system, many fans are hopeful that Blizzard will offer a different take on the concept in the form of multiple, powerful companions. Dungeon producer Ash Sweetring alluded to the possibility, teasingly implying that something is in the works. Whatever Blizzard has planned, it’s sure to bring even more excitement and strategic play to players.

The return of followers to Diablo 4 is an exciting prospect for long-time fans of the franchise and a great way to introduce new players to the world of Sanctuary. With the promise of an expanded roster of followers and the potential for a Diablo 2-style follower system, fans of the series have a lot to be excited about in the upcoming installment. Whether players choose to stick with the three pre-defined companions or hire their own followers, the possibilities are endless.
