Unveiling Larian Studios' Mysterious New Project: Excalibur
Jun-01-2024
The team at the helm of Baldur's Gate 3 has revealed their next undertaking bears the provisional name Excalibur, yet its lead, Swen Vincke, admits to being in the dark about the game's true nature.
In dialogue with GamePressure, Vincke disclosed that the secret initiative is temporarily dubbed Excalibur, a detail that was briefly highlighted in his presentation at Digital Dragons earlier in the month. When probed for further details, Vincke conceded, "To be completely candid, we're still in the process of discerning the essence of what it is," despite having "a plethora of concepts and bits and pieces."
Inquiry into whether Excalibur has ties to the Divinity series left Vincke noncommittal, suggesting a genuine uncertainty rather than reticence; "Should anyone from Larian claim to know the definitive nature of the game at this juncture, their truthfulness would be in question. It's all exploratory, given our penchant for iteration and experimentation."
Reflecting on past statements, Vincke acknowledged the fluidity of Larian's project development, implying the futility in specifying the nature of their next venture. Following Baldur's Gate 3's acclaimed release, it wasn't until January that Vincke felt he had a grasp on the initial chapter of this new venture. As part of two "highly ambitious" RPGs, its identity remains shrouded, confirmed only in its divergence from being a sequel to Baldur's Gate 3. Adam Smith, Larian's story chief, mentioned to GamesRadar+ that whilst deliberating on a sequel, the team wasn't sufficiently inspired to pursue it.
Details on Excalibur remain scarce, offering a point of curiosity as D&D's proprietor, Hasbro, seeks developers for Baldur's Gate 4.
