WhatsApp Revamps Video Quality Features in Latest Update

WhatsApp has started rolling out its HD video sharing feature for Android users, following its recent introduction of high-resolution image sharing. Previously, the platform compressed all shared videos, leading to a lower resolution view for recipients, but offering faster transmission and lower data and storage usage. With the new update, users can choose to send selected videos in high resolution.

The latest WhatsApp for Android 2.23.17.74 update now features an HD icon when one selects a video to share, and upon toggle, the video is shared in a 720p resolution, instead of the regular 480p. The feature is currently available for Gadgets 360 staff members who have updated to this version of WhatsApp for Android. No information has been released about when the HD video sharing will be accessible to users of the stable WhatsApp for iOS version.

It is important to note that users must select to send a video in higher resolution each time they send one. By default, WhatsApp sends videos in 480p, which is practically deemed lower resolution, especially with the prevalence of smartphones with full-HD and quad-HD displays in 2023. This default was likely put in place to prevent WhatsApp media from using too much smartphone storage space.

Users who want to use the high-resolution video feature on WhatsApp should update to the latest version of WhatsApp for Android. Note that the feature may not be accessible to all users.
