Xbox to Block Unauthorised Accessories

There is typically a sticker on video game console peripherals indicating whether it is an officially licensed product. Those that aren't licensed aren't guaranteed to function properly by the platform owner. Microsoft appears to be cracking down on such unlicensed products with a new policy blocking "unauthorized third-party accessories" from November 12. Some gamers have already been warned through their dashboard that unofficial accessories would stop working from that date due to "error 0x82d60002".

Unofficial accessories are usually more affordable and of lower quality and are always wired. Microsoft's preference for licensed manufacturers is understandable, as it ensures higher profits and better quality control. As per Windows Central's sources, Microsoft is reportedly looking to expand the licensing for official brands to enable more companies to produce "approved third-party wireless Xbox controllers".

The impact of this decision may not be widespread, but some in the fighting game community are displeased. They will no longer be able to use their favorite joysticks or fighting boards, such as the Hit Box and Brook Gaming solutions. This may level the playing field for those playing fighting games on the Xbox who won't have to compete against someone using those tools online.
